Facial Steaming

Soften • Prepare • Comfort

The basics

What Is It?

A facial steamer produces a controlled stream of warm water vapor that may be used during certain facial treatments.

While it’s one of the more familiar pieces of facial equipment, steam isn’t simply there because “every facial needs steam.”

We use it when it serves a purpose for your skin.

The science

How Does It Work?

Warm vapor temporarily warms and softens the skin’s surface.

This can help soften surface debris and prepare certain skin types for treatment steps such as extractions.

One common misconception is that steam “opens your pores.”

Pores don’t physically open and close like doors. Instead, warmth and moisture can soften material at the skin’s surface and make certain treatment steps easier to perform.

During your treatment

What Does It Feel Like?

Warm, humid, and relaxing.

You’ll feel gentle vapor directed toward your face while resting comfortably.

The distance, duration, and use of steam are adjusted based on your skin.

Concerns

What Can It Target?

Steam isn’t necessarily a corrective treatment by itself.

Instead, it may support other treatment steps, particularly when addressing:

  • Congestion
  • Surface buildup
  • Blackheads and clogged pores
  • Skin being prepared for extractions

Where we use it

Face + Body Uses

Our facial steamer is primarily used during facial treatments.

For body concerns, we select techniques and equipment specifically suited to the treatment area rather than automatically applying facial protocols to the body.

Our approach

How We Use It at Complexion Co. Skin Studio

We don’t automatically steam every client’s skin.

If your treatment involves congestion or extractions and your skin can comfortably tolerate warmth, steam may be incorporated during the preparation phase.

If heat isn’t appropriate for your skin, we’ll simply choose another preparation method.

Skipping steam doesn’t mean you’re receiving less of a facial. It means we’re customizing it.

Before we steam

Who May Not Be a Candidate?

Steam may be avoided or modified for clients with:

  • Highly reactive or sensitized skin
  • Significant visible redness
  • Certain heat-sensitive skin conditions
  • Active irritation or sunburn
  • A compromised skin barrier
  • Certain respiratory or medical conditions affected by warm humid air

We’ll assess your skin before deciding whether steam is appropriate.

Afterward

What to Expect Afterward

Steam itself generally doesn’t require downtime.

Your skin may temporarily feel:

  • Warm
  • Softened
  • Slightly flushed

Any additional sensitivity or downtime will depend on the other treatment steps performed.

Frequency

How Often Is It Used?

Steam isn’t something that needs to be performed on a particular schedule.

We use it when it benefits the treatment being performed.

You may receive steam during one appointment and not the next depending on what your skin needs.

Good to know

Frequently Asked Questions

Does steam open my pores?

No. Pores don’t physically open and close. Warmth and moisture help soften the skin and surface buildup.

Does every facial include steam?

No. We use it selectively.

Why wouldn’t you steam my skin?

Certain sensitive, reactive, irritated, or heat-sensitive skin conditions may benefit from avoiding unnecessary heat.

Is more steam better for clogged pores?

No. Longer or hotter isn’t automatically more effective and may unnecessarily irritate the skin.

Should I steam my face at home?

We’ll recommend home-care practices based on your individual skin rather than assuming home steaming is appropriate for everyone.

Packages

Looking for More Than One Treatment?

Steam may be incorporated into treatments within your package when it benefits your skin and the treatment being performed.

The modalities used throughout your package can change as your skin progresses.
