Aftercare 101

Intimate Waxing Aftercare 101

Smooth Starts Here. Consistency Keeps It That Way.

Your intimate wax removes hair from the root, leaving the skin smooth while temporarily making the freshly waxed area more sensitive to heat, friction, sweat and certain products.

Proper aftercare helps keep your skin calm, minimize unnecessary irritation and support smoother results between appointments.

This guide applies to the external bikini and pubic skin only. Never apply exfoliating, ingrown-hair or post-wax products internally or directly to vaginal or other mucosal tissue unless specifically designed and medically recommended for that use.

Always follow any personalized instructions provided by your esthetician.

Is this guide for you?

Services This Aftercare May Apply To

This guide may apply to:

Brazilian Wax

Hair removal from the external pubic and bikini area according to your preferred level of removal.

Bikini Wax

Professional hair removal along the bikini line for a clean, maintained appearance.

Extended Bikini Wax

Additional hair removal beyond a traditional bikini line while leaving your preferred amount of hair.

Brazilian + Intimate Skin Treatment

For clients receiving Brazilian waxing combined with targeted post-wax skin care.

Bikini + Intimate Skin Treatment

For clients combining bikini waxing with targeted care for concerns such as ingrown hairs, bumps, congestion and uneven-looking texture.

If your waxing service included professional exfoliation, a peel or another corrective treatment, follow the most restrictive aftercare instructions provided by your esthetician.

The first hours

Immediately After Your Service

Freshly waxed intimate skin may temporarily look or feel more sensitive than usual.

You may notice:

  • Mild redness
  • Pinkness around hair follicles
  • Slight warmth
  • Temporary tenderness
  • Mild sensitivity
  • Small temporary follicular bumps
  • A freshly exfoliated feeling

These responses are generally temporary and should gradually settle.

For the rest of today:

Do

  • Keep the area clean.
  • Keep unnecessary touching to a minimum.
  • Wear clean, loose and breathable clothing.
  • Choose breathable underwear when possible.
  • Use only recommended soothing post-wax products.
  • Allow the skin time to calm.
  • Change out of damp or sweaty clothing promptly.

Avoid

  • Touching, rubbing or scratching freshly waxed skin
  • Picking or squeezing follicular bumps
  • Tight underwear, leggings or restrictive clothing
  • Excessive heat
  • Excessive sweating
  • Fragranced lotions, sprays or deodorizing intimate products
  • Scrubs or exfoliating tools
  • Exfoliating acids or strong active ingredients
  • Shaving or additional hair removal

Days one & two

For the Next 24–48 Hours

Think: Clean. Cool. Dry. Low Friction.

Your follicles and surrounding skin need a little time to settle after waxing.

Avoid:

  • Intense exercise and excessive sweating
  • Saunas and steam rooms
  • Hot tubs
  • Very hot baths or showers
  • Swimming in pools, lakes or oceans
  • Tanning beds
  • Prolonged direct sun exposure when the bikini area is exposed
  • Tight leggings, shapewear or restrictive underwear
  • Activities that create significant friction against freshly waxed skin
  • Scrubs
  • Exfoliating gloves, brushes or loofahs
  • AHAs, BHAs and other exfoliating acids
  • Retinoids on the treated external skin
  • Benzoyl peroxide unless specifically recommended
  • Strong fragranced body products
  • Perfumed or deodorizing intimate products
  • Self-tanner over freshly waxed skin
  • Shaving
  • Depilatory creams
  • Additional waxing

What about sex?

We recommend avoiding sexual activity that creates friction against freshly waxed skin for approximately 24–48 hours, or until redness, tenderness and sensitivity have completely settled.

Friction, heat and sweat can further irritate freshly waxed skin.

The week after

For the Next 5–7 Days

Once the initial sensitivity has settled, your focus shifts from calming the skin to preventing ingrown hairs and maintaining smooth results.

When should I start exfoliating again?

Do not exfoliate immediately after waxing.

Once the skin is completely calm, intact and no longer red or sensitive, you can gradually resume the exfoliation routine recommended by your esthetician.

For many clients, gentle exfoliation may be appropriate after approximately 48–72 hours, but sensitive skin or additional treatments may require a longer wait.

Your exfoliation routine may include:

  • A professionally recommended ingrown-hair serum
  • Gentle chemical exfoliation appropriate for external intimate skin
  • Gentle physical exfoliation if specifically recommended

Avoid aggressive scrubbing.

More exfoliation does not mean fewer ingrown hairs.

Over-exfoliating can compromise the skin barrier and create additional irritation.

Active Ingredients

AHAs, BHAs, retinoids and other corrective products should only be applied to the appropriate external skin once it is completely calm.

Never apply professional-strength exfoliating or corrective products internally or to mucosal tissue.

Hair Removal

Do not shave between waxing appointments if your goal is to maintain a consistent waxing cycle.

Shaving cuts the hair at the surface and can disrupt the growth pattern we’re working to maintain.

Allow your hair to grow naturally until your next scheduled wax.

Reassurance

What’s Normal?

Following intimate waxing, it can be normal to temporarily experience:

  • Mild redness
  • Pinkness around follicles
  • Slight warmth
  • Mild tenderness
  • Temporary sensitivity
  • Small follicular bumps
  • Mild itching as the skin settles or as hair begins to regrow later
  • Slight sensitivity from clothing or friction

These responses should generally become less noticeable over time rather than progressively worse.

Clients with coarse or dense hair may notice more follicular redness immediately after waxing.

When to Contact a Healthcare Provider

Symptoms involving the vagina or internal genital area—including unusual vaginal discharge or odor, internal itching or burning, sores, painful urination, pelvic pain or symptoms that appear unrelated to the external waxed skin—should be evaluated by an appropriate healthcare provider.

Difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, fainting or symptoms of a serious allergic reaction require immediate medical attention. Call 911 or seek emergency care.

Between appointments

How to Maintain Your Results

Exfoliate Consistently

Once your skin is ready, use your recommended exfoliating or ingrown-hair treatment consistently.

Regular, appropriate exfoliation can help prevent dead skin from accumulating around the follicle as new hair grows.

Hydrate

Keep the external skin moisturized with an appropriate product.

Healthy, hydrated skin can help support comfortable hair regrowth between appointments.

Don’t Pick

Do not dig, squeeze or pick at ingrown hairs.

Picking can increase inflammation and may contribute to discoloration or scarring.

If you have a stubborn ingrown hair, allow your esthetician to assess it.

Reduce Friction

Be mindful of frequent friction from:

  • Tight clothing
  • Non-breathable underwear
  • Repetitive movement
  • Prolonged damp or sweaty clothing

Clients prone to irritation or ingrown hairs may benefit from choosing breathable clothing more frequently.

Don’t Shave Between Appointments

Consistency matters.

Staying on a regular waxing schedule allows your hair-growth cycle to become more predictable over time.

Stay Consistent With Home Care

The best waxing results come from combining:

Professional waxing + appropriate exfoliation + hydration + consistency.

Stay on schedule

When Should I Book Again?

For the most consistent intimate waxing results, we generally recommend returning approximately every 4–6 weeks.

Your ideal schedule depends on:

  • Your natural hair-growth cycle
  • Hair density and texture
  • How long you’ve been waxing
  • The area being waxed
  • Your individual maintenance preferences

New to waxing?

Your first few appointments are especially important.

Hair grows in different stages, which means not every hair will initially be on the same growth cycle.

Staying consistent with your appointments can help create more predictable regrowth over time.

Avoid shaving between appointments and allow approximately ¼ inch of growth when possible for your next wax.

Smooth Is Better on a Schedule.

Wax. Treat. Maintain. Repeat.
