Aftercare 101

Intimate Skin Aftercare 101

Keep It Calm. Keep It Smooth. Keep It Consistent.

Your intimate skin treatment was designed to care for the delicate external skin of the bikini and intimate area, targeting concerns such as ingrown hairs, congestion, irritation, uneven texture and the appearance of discoloration.

Because this area naturally experiences more friction, moisture and hair removal, thoughtful aftercare is especially important.

Important: Our intimate skin treatments are for external skin only. Products recommended for the bikini area should never be applied internally or directly to vaginal or other mucosal tissue unless specifically designed and medically recommended for that use.

Always follow any personalized aftercare provided by your esthetician.

The guide

Services This Aftercare May Apply To

This guide may apply to:

Intimate Skin Refinement

A targeted treatment for the external bikini/intimate area designed to address concerns such as:

  • Ingrown hairs
  • Follicular congestion
  • Post-hair-removal irritation
  • Uneven texture
  • Bumps
  • Post-inflammatory discoloration
  • Overall skin smoothness and appearance

Bikini + Intimate Skin Treatment

For clients receiving bikini hair removal combined with targeted post-wax skin care.

Brazilian + Intimate Skin Treatment

For clients receiving Brazilian hair removal combined with targeted post-wax skin care.

Depending on your skin and treatment plan, your service may incorporate professional cleansing, gentle exfoliation, extractions, soothing treatments, masks and other appropriate modalities.

If your service included waxing, chemical exfoliation or another more intensive modality, follow the most restrictive aftercare instructions provided by your esthetician.

Day one

Immediately After Your Service

Freshly treated intimate skin can be temporarily more sensitive than usual.

You may notice:

  • Mild redness or pinkness
  • Slight warmth
  • Temporary tenderness
  • Mild sensitivity
  • Redness around hair follicles
  • Slight tightness or dryness
  • Temporary sensitivity to friction

These responses should gradually settle.

For the rest of today:

Do

  • Keep the area clean.
  • Wear clean, loose and breathable clothing.
  • Choose breathable cotton underwear when possible.
  • Keep unnecessary touching to a minimum.
  • Use only the soothing or post-care products recommended by your esthetician.
  • Allow the skin time to rest.

Avoid

  • Picking or squeezing ingrown hairs or bumps
  • Scratching or rubbing the area
  • Tight underwear or restrictive clothing
  • Excessive heat and sweating
  • Fragranced lotions, sprays or body products on freshly treated skin
  • Scrubs or exfoliating tools
  • Exfoliating acids or strong active ingredients
  • Shaving, waxing or depilatory creams
  • Applying corrective products to irritated or freshly exfoliated skin

The first two days

For the Next 24–48 Hours

Think cool, clean, dry and low-friction.

Avoid

  • Intense exercise and excessive sweating
  • Saunas and steam rooms
  • Hot tubs
  • Very hot baths or showers
  • Swimming in pools, lakes or oceans
  • Tight leggings, shapewear or restrictive clothing
  • Activities that cause significant rubbing or friction against the treated area
  • Scrubs, exfoliating gloves, brushes or loofahs
  • AHAs, BHAs or other exfoliating acids
  • Retinoids on the treated external skin
  • Benzoyl peroxide unless specifically recommended
  • Fragranced body products
  • Deodorizing or perfumed intimate products
  • Self-tanner on the treated area
  • Shaving
  • Waxing
  • Depilatory creams

What about sex?

If the treated area is red, sensitive, freshly waxed or exfoliated, we recommend avoiding sexual activity that creates friction against the treated skin for approximately 24–48 hours or until the area feels completely calm and comfortable.

This is about protecting freshly treated external skin from unnecessary friction and irritation.

The week ahead

For the Next 5–7 Days

As your skin settles, you can gradually transition back into your normal intimate skin-care routine.

Continue to:

  • Cleanse gently
  • Keep the area moisturized as recommended
  • Wear breathable clothing when possible
  • Minimize unnecessary friction
  • Leave ingrown hairs and healing follicles alone
  • Follow your personalized home-care routine

When can I exfoliate again?

Do not exfoliate while the area is:

  • Red
  • Tender
  • Burning or stinging
  • Actively peeling
  • Irritated
  • Otherwise more sensitive than normal

Once the skin has returned to its normal baseline, you may gradually resume the exfoliating or ingrown-hair products recommended by your esthetician.

Depending on the treatment performed, this may be approximately 3–7 days, but more intensive exfoliation may require a longer pause.

When can I resume active products?

AHAs, BHAs, retinoids and other corrective products should only be reintroduced once the skin is fully comfortable and intact.

Never apply professional-strength exfoliating or corrective products to internal vaginal tissue or mucosal areas.

Hair Removal

Do not shave over skin that remains irritated, tender or peeling.

If you wax regularly, wait until your next appropriately scheduled waxing appointment rather than attempting additional hair removal while the skin is recovering.

Expectations

What's Normal?

Depending on the treatment performed, you may temporarily experience:

  • Mild redness
  • Pinkness around hair follicles
  • Mild warmth
  • Slight tenderness
  • Temporary sensitivity
  • Mild dryness
  • Light flaking following certain exfoliating treatments
  • Temporary sensitivity to clothing or friction
  • Slightly more noticeable pigmentation before superficial shedding after certain exfoliating treatments
  • Mild follicular bumps immediately following hair removal

These responses should generally improve rather than worsen as your skin recovers.

When to reach out

Contact Us If…

Please contact Complexion Co. Skin Studio if you experience something significantly different from the expected response discussed during your appointment, including:

  • Redness that continues to spread or worsen
  • Significant swelling
  • Severe or increasing pain
  • Persistent or intense burning
  • Blistering
  • Open or weeping skin
  • Significant crusting
  • Widespread rash or hives
  • Pus or unusual drainage
  • Increasing warmth or tenderness
  • Other signs of possible infection
  • A reaction you're unsure about

If you're concerned about your skin, contact us before attempting to exfoliate, extract an ingrown hair or apply additional corrective products.

When to contact a healthcare provider

Symptoms involving the vagina or internal genital area—including unusual vaginal discharge or odor, internal itching or burning, sores, painful urination, pelvic pain or other symptoms that appear unrelated to the external skin treatment—should be evaluated by an appropriate healthcare provider.

Difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, fainting or symptoms of a serious allergic reaction require immediate medical attention. Call 911 or seek emergency care.

Maintenance

How to Maintain Your Results

Healthy-looking intimate skin is built through consistent, gentle care.

Cleanse gently

Use a mild cleanser appropriate for the external skin. Avoid harsh soaps, aggressive scrubbing and unnecessary fragranced intimate products.

Exfoliate intentionally

Once you're cleared to resume exfoliation, use your recommended ingrown-hair or exfoliating treatment at the recommended frequency.

Do not over-exfoliate.

More product and more frequent exfoliation do not necessarily create faster results and can increase irritation.

Hydrate

Keep the external skin moisturized with an appropriate, non-irritating product.

Reduce friction

When possible, choose breathable underwear and clothing and be mindful of repetitive friction in areas prone to irritation or discoloration.

Don't pick

Avoid digging, squeezing or attempting to remove deep ingrown hairs yourself. Picking can increase inflammation and contribute to discoloration or scarring.

Stay consistent with hair removal

If waxing is your preferred method, maintaining an appropriate waxing schedule can help keep your routine consistent.
