Aftercare 101

Facial Waxing Aftercare 101

Smooth Skin Starts With Smart Aftercare.

Freshly waxed skin deserves a little extra care.

Facial waxing removes hair from the root while also temporarily exfoliating the surface of the skin. For a short period following your appointment, the treated area may be more sensitive to heat, friction, sun exposure and active skincare ingredients.

Following proper aftercare can help minimize unnecessary irritation and keep your skin looking smooth, calm and comfortable.

Always follow any personalized instructions provided by your esthetician.

Which services

Services This Aftercare May Apply To

This guide may apply to facial waxing services including:

  • Full Face Wax
  • Brow Wax + Shaping
  • Upper Lip Wax
  • Chin Wax
  • Cheek Wax
  • Sideburn Wax
  • Jawline Wax
  • Neck Wax
  • Other customized facial waxing

If your facial wax included additional treatments, exfoliation or advanced skincare, follow the most restrictive aftercare instructions provided for the services performed.

Right after

Immediately After Your Service

Freshly waxed skin may look or feel slightly different immediately following your appointment. You may notice:

  • Mild redness or pinkness
  • Slight warmth
  • Temporary sensitivity
  • Mild tenderness
  • Redness around individual hair follicles
  • Small temporary follicular bumps
  • A freshly exfoliated or especially smooth feeling

These effects should gradually settle as your skin calms.

For the Rest of Today

Do

  • Keep the treated area clean.
  • Keep unnecessary touching to a minimum.
  • Use only gentle, soothing products as recommended.
  • Keep the skin hydrated.
  • Protect freshly waxed skin from direct sun exposure.
  • Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ when exposed to daylight.
  • Use clean towels, pillowcases and anything else that regularly touches your face.

Avoid

  • Touching, rubbing or scratching freshly waxed skin
  • Picking at redness or follicular bumps
  • Scrubs or exfoliating devices
  • Retinoids or exfoliating acids
  • Strong acne treatments
  • Fragranced or irritating skincare
  • At-home peels or resurfacing products
  • Applying unnecessary products to freshly waxed skin

The first two days

For the Next 24–48 Hours

Your freshly waxed skin needs time to settle.

Avoid

  • Intense exercise and excessive sweating
  • Saunas and steam rooms
  • Hot tubs
  • Very hot showers directly on treated areas
  • Swimming in chlorinated pools, lakes or oceans if the skin remains irritated
  • Tanning beds
  • Prolonged direct sun exposure
  • Scrubs and physical exfoliation
  • Cleansing brushes or exfoliating devices
  • AHAs and BHAs
  • Retinoids/retinol
  • Benzoyl peroxide and other potentially irritating acne treatments
  • At-home chemical peels
  • Strong or highly active skincare
  • Additional facial hair-removal methods over the treated area
  • Picking or squeezing the skin

What About Makeup?

Whenever possible, allow freshly waxed skin to remain makeup-free for the rest of the day, particularly if redness or sensitivity is present.

If you need to wear makeup after your skin has calmed, use clean brushes or applicators and avoid applying products over skin that feels irritated or compromised.

The week ahead

For the Next 5–7 Days

Your skin should gradually return to its normal routine.

When Can I Restart My Skincare Actives?

Do not restart active ingredients while the waxed area remains:

  • Red
  • Tender
  • Burning or stinging
  • Peeling
  • Irritated
  • More sensitive than usual

Once your skin has completely returned to its normal baseline, gradually resume your regular skincare routine. This may include:

  • Retinoids
  • AHAs/BHAs
  • Exfoliating toners
  • Benzoyl peroxide
  • Strong vitamin C products
  • Physical exfoliants
  • Other corrective products

For many clients, the skin settles within a few days. More sensitive skin may require additional time.

When in doubt, wait—and contact us before restarting a potentially irritating product.

Professional Treatments

Avoid stacking aggressive exfoliation or resurfacing treatments immediately around a waxing appointment.

Chemical peels, intensive exfoliation and other advanced facial treatments should be appropriately spaced from waxing according to your esthetician’s recommendations.

No need to worry

What’s Normal?

Following facial waxing, it can be normal to temporarily experience:

  • Mild redness
  • Pinkness
  • Slight warmth
  • Mild tenderness
  • Temporary sensitivity
  • Redness around individual follicles
  • Small temporary follicular bumps
  • Slight dryness
  • A freshly exfoliated feeling

These reactions should generally become less noticeable over time rather than progressively worse.

Clients with sensitive or reactive skin may remain pink slightly longer than others.

How to Maintain Your Results

Stay Consistent

Facial waxing works best when maintained on a regular schedule.

Consistent appointments allow us to remove hair as it moves through its natural growth cycles and maintain your preferred shape and level of smoothness.

Protect Your Skin

Wear broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily.

Freshly waxed skin is temporarily more vulnerable to irritation from sun exposure, and daily SPF is an important part of maintaining healthy-looking skin overall.

Keep Your Routine Gentle

Use skincare appropriate for your skin type and avoid unnecessary over-exfoliation.

If you regularly use retinoids, prescription acne treatments, exfoliating acids or other resurfacing products, always tell your esthetician before waxing.

Your skincare routine may affect whether waxing is appropriate at the time of your appointment.

Don’t Pick

Avoid squeezing follicular bumps or picking at the skin after waxing.

Skip At-Home Hair Removal

For the most consistent results, avoid shaving or attempting to wax the treated area between appointments.

Let the hair grow to an appropriate length for your next professional wax.

  • Your natural hair-growth cycle
  • Hair density
  • Your desired level of maintenance
  • Your skincare routine

Some areas or clients may need a slightly different schedule.
