Aftercare 101

Chemical Peel Aftercare 101

Protect Your Skin. Support Your Results.

A professional chemical peel works by creating controlled exfoliation to encourage smoother, brighter, more refined-looking skin. Your skin may be temporarily more sensitive following treatment, making proper aftercare essential.

How much you peel—or whether you visibly peel at all—can vary depending on the peel performed, your skin, and the depth of treatment. Visible peeling is not required for a successful treatment.

Always follow the personalized instructions provided by your esthetician, as they take priority over these general guidelines.

Services This Aftercare May Apply To

This guide applies when a professional chemical peel is performed as a standalone treatment or incorporated into an appropriate customized facial or corrective treatment.

Chemical exfoliation may be selected to help improve the appearance of:

  • Uneven skin tone
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Post-breakout discoloration
  • Acne and congestion
  • Rough or uneven texture
  • Dullness
  • Fine lines and visible signs of aging
  • Overall skin clarity and radiance

The specific peel, strength, number of layers and treatment plan will be selected based on your skin and professional assessment.

Immediately After Your Service

Your skin has just undergone controlled professional exfoliation. Treat it gently.

You May Notice

  • Mild redness or pinkness
  • Warmth or mild sensitivity
  • A tight or dry feeling
  • Increased sensitivity to touch or products
  • A smooth, shiny or slightly taut appearance
  • Mild darkening of existing pigmentation before it begins to improve

Some clients notice very little immediately after their peel. Others experience more noticeable dryness or flaking over the following several days.

For the rest of today:

Do

  • Leave post-treatment products on your skin as directed.
  • Keep your hands away from your face.
  • Keep the skin comfortable and hydrated with approved products.
  • Protect your skin from direct sun exposure.
  • Use only the post-care products or gentle routine recommended by your esthetician.
  • Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ as directed when exposed to daylight.

Do Not

  • Pick, peel, scratch or rub the skin.
  • Try to make your skin peel.
  • Use scrubs, exfoliating brushes or cleansing devices.
  • Apply retinoids, exfoliating acids or other strong active ingredients.
  • Use at-home peels, exfoliating masks or resurfacing treatments.
  • Wax or use depilatory creams on the treated area.

For the Next 24–48 Hours

During this period, focus on protecting, hydrating and calming your skin.

Avoid

  • Intense exercise and excessive sweating
  • Saunas and steam rooms
  • Hot tubs
  • Very hot showers directly on the treated area
  • Swimming in pools, lakes or oceans
  • Tanning beds
  • Prolonged or unnecessary direct sun exposure
  • Scrubs and exfoliating tools
  • Retinoids/retinol
  • AHAs, BHAs and other exfoliating acids
  • Benzoyl peroxide unless specifically approved
  • Strong or potentially irritating active ingredients
  • At-home chemical peels
  • Waxing, threading or depilatory creams on the treated area
  • Additional professional exfoliating treatments unless specifically planned by your provider

Makeup

Whenever possible, keep the skin makeup-free for the remainder of the day.

If makeup is necessary after the initial post-treatment period, only apply it if your skin feels comfortable and intact. Use clean applicators and avoid heavily fragranced or irritating products.

For the Next 5–7 Days

This is when you may notice more visible post-peel changes.

Keep your routine simple:

Cleanse. Hydrate. Moisturize. Protect.

Do not attempt to speed up the peeling process.

Do Not

  • Pull or pick peeling skin
  • Scrub away flakes
  • Use facial brushes or exfoliating devices
  • Use physical exfoliants
  • Use additional chemical exfoliants
  • Use retinoids while your skin is peeling or irritated
  • Wax the treated area
  • Use depilatory creams
  • Perform at-home peels or resurfacing treatments

When Can I Restart My Actives?

Do not automatically restart active ingredients just because a certain number of days has passed.

Retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, exfoliating toners, benzoyl peroxide, strong vitamin C products and other potentially irritating actives should only be gradually reintroduced once your skin is fully healed and back to its normal baseline with no active peeling, unusual redness, tenderness, burning or sensitivity.

For many superficial peels this may be around 5–7 days, but some treatments require a longer pause.

Follow the personalized timeline provided by your esthetician.

Hair Removal

Avoid waxing, depilatory creams and other potentially irritating hair-removal methods on treated skin until it is completely recovered. Your esthetician can advise you on when it is appropriate to resume based on the peel performed.

What’s Normal?

Your response will depend on the peel performed and your individual skin.

It can be normal to experience:

  • Mild redness
  • Mild warmth or sensitivity
  • Tightness
  • Dryness
  • Flaking
  • Light peeling
  • Temporary increased sensitivity
  • A slightly shiny or taut appearance
  • Temporary darkening of existing pigmentation or spots before they shed or improve
  • Little to no visible peeling

Peeling may begin a few days after treatment rather than immediately.

Remember:

More peeling does not mean better results.

Some professional peels produce very little visible shedding while still providing effective exfoliation.

Never pick or pull at peeling skin—even when it is tempting.

How to Maintain Your Results

Your peel is one part of your overall skin plan.

Keep Your Skin Protected.

Wear broad-spectrum SPF 30+ every day, reapplying regularly, and limit unnecessary direct sun exposure. Sun protection is particularly important following chemical exfoliation and when working to improve discoloration.

Follow Your Home-Care Routine.

Once your skin has fully recovered, return to the personalized routine recommended by your esthetician.

Your routine may include:

01

Cleanse

A cleanser appropriate for your skin type and current condition.

02

Treat

Targeted products selected for your individual concerns.

03

Hydrate

Ingredients that help maintain hydration and support skin comfort.

04

Moisturize

Barrier-supporting moisture appropriate for your skin.

05

Protect

Broad-spectrum SPF 30+ every morning.

Stay Consistent.

Avoid jumping between products, over-exfoliating or trying to accelerate your results with aggressive at-home treatments.

Controlled + consistent beats aggressive.

Always follow your personalized home-care recommendations. Do not introduce a new corrective active immediately following your peel unless specifically instructed to do so.

When Should I Book Again?

Chemical peels are most effective when performed intentionally—not excessively.

For many superficial professional peels, treatments may be performed approximately every 4–6 weeks, depending on the peel used, your skin’s response and your treatment goals.

Some peel protocols may use a different schedule.

Your esthetician will determine the appropriate treatment interval based on:

  • Your skin condition
  • The peel performed
  • Your skin’s response
  • Your home-care routine
  • Your overall treatment plan

Never schedule another peel simply because your skin has stopped flaking. Your skin should be properly recovered before receiving additional professional exfoliation.
